Transmitting signals as another form of expressing thoughts or ideas started thousands of years ago with the use of smoke signals or drums. This development began in the Americas, Africa, and some parts of Asia. In Europe during the 1790s, the first semaphore systems materialized. Moreover, further developments in electrical telecommunication systems began to appear in the 1830s. The first sign of modern communication emerged with the invention of the telephone. It was the first time man has experienced an instant mode of communication with someone who is not physically present in ones vicinity.
